I love navy. As I get older, I tend to turn to it more often than I do black. Don’t get me wrong, though, as black is still excellent, and for evenings out my mantra has been, and probably always will be, ‘If in doubt, wear black’. But for daytime navy is sometimes a better option, because it kind of feels a bit softer, less harsh, and it goes with almost every other colour ever. For this post, however, I’m pairing it with two of the key colour trends for this winter: brown and burgundy.
Talking of getting older, I got another year older yesterday. Or today if you’re a member of the group who clicks through on Saturday evening. If you are, I see you, and I love that you’re keen enough to read this post as soon as you get the email. I’m not sure how I feel about being 52 yet, but I certainly don’t shy away from telling people how old I am. I like to think of it as a badge of honour rather than something to hide. I’m often at events where I am the oldest person in the room by at least 10 years, but I really don’t mind it. It actually makes me feel MORE confident, if anything. I feel like I’m out there showing that you can still be relevant in your field even when you could be the mother of most of the people that surround you.
I’ve digressed, so let’s get back on track and have a look at some chic winter colour combinations using navy, burgundy and brown…
INDIGO JEANS AND POLO KNIT
If there’s a space in your jeans collection that you have an urge to fill, let it be for a pair of indigo wide-legs. They bridge the gap perfectly between casual jeans and smart trousers. I’ve found myself reaching for indigo a lot lately. Incidentally, I’ve put a ban on buying any new trainers for the time being as I have far too many. Can you really have too many? Don’t answer that; I don’t need any encouragement. But if I was looking, I’d be investing in these brown suede Nike Dunks as they would look great with navy wide-leg trousers or jeans.

A MINI & AN OVERCOAT
It’s common knowledge that I’m a fan of a mini skirt in winter. High denier tights hide many a sin but, to the same end, I have spent enough hours in the gym over the past couple of years to warrant not feeling too concerned about getting the legs out. I actually asked to go back to my strength class earlier than expected this year, and I was the first client back in after Christmas – who even am I? Three years ago I would have thought a ‘sissy squat’ was something to do with being scared to have a pee in the wild…

BROWN TROUSERS RULE OK
Another thing I wouldn’t have predicted is that brown corduroy trousers would be one of my most-worn items of clothing over the winter months. Who knew that brown was such a versatile (and fashionable) colour? In fact, I hear that mocha brown is THE trending colour of 2025, so well done you if you bought into it last year, it’s here to stay.

THE GUCCI EFFECT
Remember that Gucci fashion show last spring? The one with all the suede, the baggy jeans and the ballet pumps? I loved it then, and now the high street is catching up. Love these flats from Mango and these Mary Janes from & Other Stories. Watch out for tan suede being BIG again this year.

ALL ABOUT DESIGNER VINTAGE
As many designers are plundering their archives this season, you really don’t need to buy new to get the look. I’m a big fan of Vestiaire Collective for designer pre-loved deals. Like with Vinted, you can now offer your own cheeky price and sometimes you can bag a real bargain. You can potentially pick up a vintage Gucci bag or the like for a fraction of the price of buying new.

MY BEST BELT
This Déhanche belt that I bought in August last year was, I think, in terms of price per wear, my best buy of the year. I have definitely worn it way more than 30 times already, and 30 is my magic number for knowing for sure that something was a good buy. I might do a full post soon on how belts can elevate an outfit if anyone is keen.

FLIP REVERSE IT
This outfit is basically the same yet different to the one above, but I wanted to include this Essentiel Antwerp bag as I bought it for myself as a Christmas present and it’s fast becoming my go-to daily bag. Remember: a self gift is the best gift, as you always get what you want. I am yet to buy my own birthday present but I do have my eye on something.

As last week’s Instagram post recreating one of the blog looks in real life went down so well, I will try and make it regular thing from now on.
