I think September is my favourite fashion month. It’s typically the start of the new season styles and it’s the time when we can begin thinking about those layers again. Don’t get me wrong: I love summer. I love wearing shorts and I love those evenings when you can go out and not have to worry about a jacket. Let’s be honest, though; that doesn’t happen very often in this country, so we really do need to make the most of it. But autumn fashion is just, well, better.
September is that point in the year when you can wear either a sweater or a jacket but there’s not yet a requirement for both. When you can still wear skirts or dresses without the addition of tights or secret leggings, and when a nice cardi works perfectly to complete your outfit.
It’s still quite early for all the new season styles to be in, plus it’s still warm, so we obviously have items in our wardrobe that we can continue to enjoy wearing without the need for a whole new look. But let’s be honest: at this time of year, thoughts turn to the odd new item that will complement what we already have. Here are six outfit ideas that I personally would like to wear this month…
LADYLIKE DENIM
I do love a well-fitting pair of wide-leg jeans, and I think I have found my absolute perfect pair. They are the ‘Ayla’ style from Citizens of Humanity. Admittedly NOT cheap, to put it mildly, and I will keep my eyes open for an equally perfect yet more affordable high street pair in the coming weeks, but I LOVE them. I plan on wearing mine A LOT this month (to get that cost per wear down). I like the idea of combining them with a nice blouse, studded Mary Jane flats and a fitted cardi or jacket. I bought lovely ladylike bag for a song in the PRADA outlet shop near Florence, so I might do a whole blog of more outfits I can wear it with.
- Albaray navy spot tie neck top
- Heart & Serpent vintage Victorian name ring
- H&M pocket detail cardigan
- Citizens of Humanity Ayla wide jeans
- COS Fold Oversized tote bag
- Hush Diamante Studded Leather Mary Jane Flats
LEOPARD & RED
I actually wore a similar version of this last month, and I can confirm that I very much enjoyed the look of red and white with the leopard print. I will also wear with my leopard trousers, and I might add an oversized blazer if it gets too chilly for the sweater vest/tank top/ knitted waistcoat alone.
- Loel large gold spiral necklace
- Albaray Wool Blend V Neck Tank Top
- Arket Heavyweight Boxy T‑Shirt
- Ganni Leopard-print cotton-poplin midi skirt
- A.P.C Ninon Chaine Shoulder Bag
- Adidas Gazelle Indoor Shoes
CLASSIC NAVY
Is there a more stylish colour than navy blue? I’m saying not: it’s the topmost classic colour for making you feel grown up and put together. Especially cool when worn with a flash of white. If you don’t want to look too ‘bizness’, leave the shirt out and wear a ribbed vest under your neat cardigan instead. I will be wearing a version of this with my pin-striped wide-leg trousers. Adding a bright shoe for a bit of extra colour.
- COS Chunky Mariner Pendant Necklace
- H&M Knitted cardigan
- M&S Ribbed Cotton Vest Top
- M&S Pinstripe Pleat Front Wide Leg Trousers
- Mint Velvet Black Leather Chunky Studded Belt
- Boden Mary Jane Ballet Flats
THE RUGBY TOP
We definitely touched on this trend earlier in the year, but I’ve noticed a lot more styles coming to the high street for the new season. I would still keep it casual with chino-style trousers and high tops.
- Mint Velvet Navy Striped Rugby Shirt
- Monsoon Billie Denim Bomber Jacket
- Toast Flat Front Cotton Twill Trousers
- Hush Marlon Oversized Leather Tote Bag
- Nike Blazer Phantom and Black Trainers
WHITE & TAN
This is essentially another version of the Gucci-inspired look from last week’s post. I like it a lot and I definitely plan on trying this look soon. I also like this H&M take on the Celine/Jill Sander logo T‑shirt. Break up the all-white with a cool belt. Studs are still having a moment and there are so many high street versions of THAT Khaite belt around right now, so there’s plenty to choose from without the hefty price tag. The Uniqlo Tardis bag now comes in a larger quilted version; if you need even MORE space within your bag, then this one is for you.
- H&M Printed Round Neck T‑shirt
- H&M Short Brown Button Up Jacket
- Mint Velvet Black Leather Chunky Studded Belt
- Hush Abi Wide Leg Jeans
- Uniqlo Round Quilted Shoulder Bag
- Adidas Originals gum sole Handball Spezial trainers
BARREL JEANS, YES THEY ARE STILL A THING
And the reason I know they are still a thing? Because they’re no longer the domain of the designer brands or even the pricier end of the high street. The style has trickled right down to H&M, River Island, Matalan and the like. Once it reaches mass market, you know it’s here to stay for a while. Plus you can pick up a pair for less. My favourites, though, are still these Good Luck jeans from Free People. Definitely my most-worn pair of jeans this year. Fear not, they don’t look as bandy-legged when you’re actually wearing them as they do in the pictures.
- Boden Cord Zip Through Jacket
- Missoma Savi Dome Medium Gemstone Hoop Earrings
- River Island Grey graphic print boyfriend t‑shirt
- Free People We The Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans
- Le Bon Shoppe Boyfriend Navy Socks
- Novesta Star Master Coated Canvas Trainers
Let me know if there’s anything you want a post on this season – is there something you love, but think you’d struggle to style? I’d be happy to try and help…
