Try saying that title quickly. ‘Seven spring midi skirt styles’. It’s not quite at the ‘If a dog chews shoes, whose shoes does he choose?’ level of tongue twisters. Actually, it’s nothing like that. I really should get better at titles. But, I promised you a skirts blog – specifically, midi skirts – as I know mini and maxi styles can have their own challenges. A fear of knicker-showing and a fear of tripping over on an escalator are two that immediately spring to mind.
I have become firm friends with skirts over the past year or so. Previously, I was a big dress fan but they have fallen by the wayside of late. I don’t really know why, and I’m sure I’ll get my dress mojo back at some point but, for now, if I want a more feminine look I tend to reach for a midi skirt.
I feel like I mention weather a lot in these posts, but I am British, and that’s what we do for a hobby. April has started off well, and I was in a white skirt and no socks earlier this week, but you never know, so I hope I’ve included options for all potential spring climates here. Let’s have a look…
PLEATED SKIRTS
Always a classic, always smart. Sometimes reminiscent of school uniform, but if you steer clear of a just-below-the-knee grey version, I’m sure you’ll be fine. Besides, if you’re my age, you should have got over thinking you look like a school girl now, frankly. Sorry, but someone had to say it.

GINGHAM SKIRT
Gingham may also remind some of school uniform, but I love a bit of gingham in the summer. It brings back happy memories for me as I persuaded my mother to make me a matching top and midi skirt from purple gingham instead of wearing the regulation school pinafore-style summer dress. I’m not entirely sure how I got away with that look at middle school, but those were different times. We would also wear our crinkle faux-leather kitten heels and carry a can of Harmony hairspray with us at all times to keep those perms in check.

LEATHER SKIRT
Here’s one for cooler days. I’ve also stolen this look directly from Prada. If I were a high-net-worth individual I think I’d dress almost exclusively in Prada and Miu Miu. It’s just so cool and classic. I had a friend at work who did this. His boyfriend worked for them, though, so he got a hefty friends and family discount. Unfortunately, I am not rich enough to buy only Prada, so I make do with saving for a bag, buying pre-loved shoes and paying homage to the look via the wonders of the high street.

LACE SKIRT
We can thank Chloé for bringing this one back. It was on their catwalk last year, and now the high street has come up with some more affordable styles. This one is from Tu at Sainsburys, so you can pick up a boho catwalk look when you’re doing your grocery shop. I did just that and I can confirm it’s a very good skirt indeed (and less than £30). You could toughen up a lace skirt by wearing it with a leather jacket and black accessories, but it would work equally as well with any suede or denim jacket, sandals and a basket bag.

WHITE SKIRT
A white midi skirt is THE skirt to have this year. I would recommend getting a simple slip to go under it if you decide to go with this look. Not many of the skirts I have seen are lined, and you could end up with a bit of a Princess Di moment if you don’t double up. Also, white knickers, just like white bras, show up under white clothes – so stick with nude underwear.

DENIM SKIRT
Surely everyone has one of these? Yes, you can still wear your jean skirt, but there are also a lot more A‑lined ones around this year too, which are that little bit smarter.

CO-ORD SKIRT
This is a great alternative to a dress if you’ve got an event coming up. I love a separate that you can wear for dress-up and that works just as well worn casually afterwards. ME+EM do this so well. This lace and satin co-ord is a perfect example. Wear the top with jeans and the skirt with a big slouchy jumper.
