Crushing on Corduroy

If there is one fabric that screams ‘Hey, everyone it’s getting a bit cold now!’ then that’s Corduroy. I know it has it detractors, usually those same people who also won’t wear Velvet, even at Christmas, I mean really… But I love a bit of Corduroy at this time of year. It kind of conjures up memories of a 70’s childhood. When I was about 6 (at the very END of the 70’s I might add) I had a red corduroy pinafore dress and a patterned full length ‘Holly Hobby’ Party dress. Anyone else remember those? I think the reason I like the Vampires Wife dresses so much is before they totally remind me of that Holly Hobby Dress!

Corduroy is definitely having a moment again this season. You don’t have to go the full 70’s vibe, but there’s certainly a lot out there to choose from, so here are my picks…

CORDUROY SKIRT

I came across this M&S Skirt last weekend. I bought the longer length version as otherwise it would have been a bit too knee-length for me and that’s a tricky one to master. I’m yet to find a knee-length skirt that hasn’t made me look like my Grandmother. It doesn’t help that I pretty much refuse to wear heels these days. I think with this one an ankle boot or a pair of white trainers would work best, depending on the tights/no tights situation. I refuse to wear tights before at least the middle of October by the way.

3. M&S Chunky Corduroy Midi Skirt
4. & Other Stories Pointed Toe Boots

CORDUROY TROUSERS

Apologies for featuring these cropped corduroy trousers from Cos for the 3rd week in a row! But they are still the best ones I have found! I got the green version, and I would buy these navy ones too, but I already have 2 pairs of navy cords from last year that I bought late in the winter so didn’t get a chance to wear enough. I will pair mine with a classic Breton jumper, I bought this Arket one last year too, you know it’s a classic when they bring out the same designs year after year.

2. John Lewis Collection Oatmeal Crombie Coat
3. See By Chloe Brown Leather Shoulder Bag
4. Cos Wide Leg Cropped Corduroy Trousers
5. Veja Flannel and Suede Trainers

CORDUROY ALL-IN-ONE

When I say all-in-one I really mean dungarees, but I also found a couple of cord jumpsuits too. I’ve banged on enough about the merits of a good pair of dungarees so I wont go into it again. Just to say they are perfect for weekends and you are never too old for them. You are also not too old for the ‘Dad Trainer’ trend or an expensive bag with googly eyes or an Exorcist T-shirt. A film I watched when I was 13 and it scarred me for life. Didnt help that me and my friends used to listen to ‘Tubular Bells’ on my record player in the dark, just to scare ourselves even more. Teenagers are weird…

1. New Look Black Courduroy Dungarees
2. Anya Hindmarch Mini ‘Eyes’ Leather Bag
3. Mango Faux Fur Biker Jacket
4. H&M Printed Exorcist T Shirt
5. Axel Arigato Leather and Mesh Trainers

CORDUROY JACKET

If dungarees are not your thing, then how about a simple cord blazer? Makes a change from the regular black blazer and can still smarten things up. Would look great with jeans and a grey knit or over a nice dress. Yes, this is a Ganni dress. I’m definitely not over Ganni yet. Far from it. Add a bit of sparkle with an (affordable) diamond necklace by Kirstie Le Marque. One to add to your Christmas list. I’ve mentioned the ‘C’ word twice now in this post. Sorry.

1. Kirstie Le Marque Diamond Star Necklace
2. Ganni Rometty Smocked Midi Dress
3. Arket Blue Corduroy Blazer
4. Mango Chain Leather Bag
5. Kurt Gieger Leather Dalby Ankle Boots

CORDUROY SUIT

If you’re really feeling the corduroy vibes then why not go for the full suit? I bought a brown one in the Zara sale last year. I’m still unsure of the colour, but I’m going to give it a whirl again soon just for the hell of it. This bag is my current Gucci obsession. I’m not over Gucci yet either I’m afraid.  It’s basically a big wallet on a chain but that means you never need to take it off right?

1. New Look Blue Corduroy Double Breasted Blazer
2. New Look Blue Corduroy Cropped Trousers
3. Gucci Marmont Leather Chain Wallet Bag
4. The Outnet Zoe Karssen Printed T Shirt
5. Nike M2K Techno Trainers

How do you feel about Corduroy? Will yo be buying into this one?

  1. Just bought a gold/mustard double-breasted corduroy jacket from a small town in Northern Spain-my excuse? I was cold! I’d also had a couple of glasses of Rioja…………..I’m old enough to remember wearing blue cord hot pants first time around. Anyway jacket looks great with denim and midi dresses.

  2. What a great post to read – not only because I too am a huge fan of corduroy (I just love how soft cosy it is) but because I too had the full length “Holly Hobby” party dress, in red & blue patchwork, with matching bonnet! My best friend had one too in a different colour way. We rocked many a birthday party circa 1977/78 as Holly Hobby twinnies……
I had not made the connection with The Vampires Wife dresses which I also love – now you’ve said it, it makes perfect sense. 🙂

  3. What a great post to read – not only due to its topic of corduroy, which I absolutely love courtesy of its soft & cosy feel, yet also because I too had a Holly Hobby party dress (with bonnet!) which I loved. Mine was in a red & blue patchwork – sent from America by my cousins. My best friend also had a Holly Hobby party dress – we rocked many a birthday party circa 1977/78 as Holly Hobby twinnies!
I hadn’t made the style connection between the HH party dress and The Vampire’s Wife – yet as soon as I read that the attraction for me too of TVW dresses made total sense!

    1. So glad it wasn’t just me who remembers those dresses! And the similarities with The Vampires Wife! Xx
