I’m sorry that I’m not very good at keeping my promises when it comes to themes for these posts. I did say I’d look at going-out outfits, but I just haven’t been inspired by very much recently, and I always do these posts based on outfits that I would actually wear myself. I’ve started a small folder of going-out ideas though, so I’ll put something together for you soon.

This week, what I have been inspired by is autumn jackets. I do love a good jacket, and this time of year is the best for them. I’ve tried on quite a few of these and (more than) a couple have already made their way into my wardrobe. But I don’t feel bad about this as recently I’ve been quite good at sticking to my previously lapsed ‘one in, one out’ policy.

I’m yet to go through the winter coat and jacket stash in my youngest son’s wardrobe, though. That’s this week’s task now that he’s vacated his room to go to university. Shout out to anyone else feeling the gut-wrenching loss of their uni kids. I didn’t expect it to hit me so hard. But it has got easier each day, and he’s coming back next weekend, so that has helped.

Let’s have a look at eight jacket styles I’m loving this autumn.

THE BOMBER JACKET

I bought this jacket as soon as I saw it in M&S last week. It reminded me so much of the classic bomber jackets from my teenage years. You know, those with the orange lining that we borrowed from our boyfriends in the early ‘90s. This one doesn’t have an orange lining, but it does have a removable fluffy collar, and it’s a great shape for wearing with your cargos or your barrel jeans.

THE SUEDE JACKET

I know there will be some of you rolling your eyes at the thought of a suede jacket and thinking: ‘How will I keep it clean? Won’t it melt in the rain?’ My first piece of advice is to use this stuff, and the second is to just wear your suede and not worry about the potential pitfalls. Suede jackets can look just as good when they’ve been worn in and bashed around a bit. Plus, if you’re blowing a couple of hundred quid on a jacket, then you need to wear it as much as possible to get your money’s worth.

THE LEATHER JACKET

If the only leather jacket you own is a biker one, you might want to think about an update. There’s nothing wrong with a biker jacket, and I won’t be getting rid of mine because you can guarantee they’ll come around again soon enough, seeing as they’re a classic style. But for the past few years, the more blouson style has been my personal preference. My husband says they look like something Jeremy Clarkson would wear, but what does he know about current style? He still owns (and wears) skinny jeans.

I tried on this Second Stories bomber jacket this week and I have immediately ordered it in the burgundy. It’s made from such soft leather and a it’s a lovely oversized fit.

THE RAIN JACKET

I get a lot of messages about where to buy stylish raincoats. I have to say, it’s slim pickings out there at the moment. For a fully waterproof jacket, there’s always Rains and Stutterheim, both of which are good but not massively stylish. If you can bear to have something that’s more showerproof or rain-resistant than completely waterproof, I can recommend this one from Barbour that I bought last year. There’s also this one from Uniqlo that comes in a multitude of colours, and it has elastic in the hem so you can cinch it in to create that nice, slightly cropped balloon-style look

THE FUNNEL NECK JACKET

I don’t think I need to say much more about this one, seeing as I featured it in my post on this season’s top trends. It’s a no-brainer. I’d like to give another mention to these Uniqlo jersey barrel trousers, though. They’re excellent, and I feel like giving a knowing nod to anyone I see out and about wearing them. They also now come in corduroy. Get them.

THE STATEMENT JACKET

If you’d like your jacket to do the talking, then this is the one for you. I love a piece that does all the heavy lifting and allows you to just wear basic black underneath. This one from Rixo is my current favourite. My new ‘dressing up’ trick is to add a pair of chandelier earrings. You’d be amazed what a difference they make to an otherwise quite ordinary outfit.

THE CHECKED JACKET

I based this outfit on one I wore quite a bit last autumn and winter, and I’m very much looking forward to wearing it again this year. The loose-fit COS twine jeans are back in stock again, and the high street has caught up with Gucci and produced some very good dupes of their suede loafer boots

THE RETRO / WHIMSICAL JACKET

Finally, a jacket style I wouldn’t have particularly thought was ‘me’, had I not actually gone and tried it on in real life. I thought these Victoriana and military-style jackets would look a bit ‘costume‑y’, but if you keep the rest of the outfit quite simple, they look great. I got this one from Free People. It has a little frill at the hem and cuffs, and looks really good with just jeans and a tee.
