5 Coats For This Season

Last week was all about new boots, so it makes sense that this week we should be looking at coats. New Season coats are almost as exciting as boots I reckon. Every year around this time I do the Wardrobe ‘switch-over’ and pack away all the high summer dresses and get out all the coats. Actually that’s not exactly true, my coats live permanently in my youngest sons wardrobe as there isn’t really anywhere else for them. The collection is ever-expanding, but I will sell a couple before I go too mad this season. There are a few in there that I didn’t wear last winter, and that’s my signal to pass them onto someone who will.

As ever, there are tons of styles to choose from. I’ve narrowed it down to 5 types. All standard coats though, I will get into Parkas, Puffers and Faux Furs once the weather gets colder, and you know you can always wear your trusty Trench Coat on rainy days for now too.

CHECKED COAT

This one seems to be a real trend this year. A big checked coat can sometimes be tricky. You can’t really wear it with florals or other checks, but it will be a feature to your outfit, so keep the rest simple. I love a good cardi, this wool one from Arket comes in some great colours. I love the baby blue with jeans and trainers. Check out this grey M&S cardi too, similar shape and style for half the price. Would be a useful addition to wear over your summer dresses if you’re not quite ready to give them up yet!

CLASSIC NAVY COAT

Everyone should have a navy coat. I much prefer navy to black when it comes to coats. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t wear black with navy, and while you’re at it, don’t believe anyone that says ’ Blue and Green should never be seen’. Personally, I think they go together perfectly. Navy and Bottle Green is a particular favourite of mine. I LOVE this See By Chloe dress, I’m a sucker for any dresses that look vaguely Amish, just not to be teemed with a bonnet…

SMALL CHECK COAT

I mean the checks are small, not the coats are small. I guess this could be herringbone? or houndstooth? are they the same thing? I bought this coat from M&S last week. You can’t tell from the website but it is actually green and black checks which is what swayed me. Last year one person said I suited green. Since then I’ve been drawn to it more than usual. It’s amazing what a compliment will do to a person. Never be afraid to give one! I bought these Levis ‘Wedgie’ jeans when I was in Canada, they are excellent. Take few wears to ‘break-in’, I literally couldn’t sit down in them the first day, but they have a nice high waist and kind of mould to your shape. Super flattering.

ANIMAL PRINT COAT

Obviously Leopard is the ultimate. A faux fur one should be staple in anyones wardrobe, but it’s not time to be thinking about faux fur just yet. I think I’ll leave that particular post for when it really is cold. I absolutely love this Baum und Pferdgarten green leopard print coat! you would really stand out from the crowd in this! I’d pair it with a simple all-navy outfit again.

3. Baum und Pferdgarten Green Leopard Print Coat
4. Cos Wide Leg Cropped Corduroy Trousers
5. Boden Evie Navy Pointed Flats

CAMEL COAT

A camel coat is a stone cold classic. If you get the right style it should last you until it literally falls apart, as it will never go out of  fashion. I have the navy version of this M&S coat. I’ve had it for about 5 years and it’s still one of my favourites. I’m very tempted to get it in this colour too as the other camel coat I have has rather been attacked my moths as I foolishly left it in the ‘cupboard of doom’ under the stairs without adequate protection.

1. M&S Cashmere Blend Wool Camel Coat
2. & Other Stories Leather Mini Saddle Bag
3. Boden Daisy Roll Neck Wool Jumper
4. Boden Hoxton Black Leather Ankle Boots
5. Warehouse Honey Check Mini Skirt

Which one of these 5 coat styles is your favourite? If I had to pick just one I think it would have to be a classic navy coat, with Camel as a close run second.
