It’s that time of year again when Claudia is back in the Traitors’ castle being all ‘Scottish goth’ and wearing her on-brand kilts and chunky knitwear. While we love her looks, there are few of us brave enough to embrace her entire ensembles. What we can start to think about, though, is wearing a nice skirt.
I often forget how much I like a good skirt. I definitely wear them more in the winter than the summer. Maybe it’s the added security of a pair of 50-denier tights and the fact they work so well with our favourite knee-high boots.
Here are seven skirt styles that I am loving this season.
THE KILT SKIRT
There’s a high chance most of these will have sold out by the time you read this. The Claudia effect is strongest when it comes to kilt sales. I have added as many as I can find in the scroll bar under the outfit collage. The best is definitely this one from Brora. It’s not cheap, but as this is now the third year we’ve been wearing this style of skirt, and the kilt is basically a permanent classic, its cost-per-wear would probably come down fairly quickly.

- Massimo Dutti Knee-high leather boots
THE LEATHER SKIRT
It doesn’t have to be real leather. Fake leather is just as good when it comes to a winter skirt, as there’s a high chance we’ll be wearing tights with it – in which case, you won’t feel like a boil-in-the-bag chicken. I think some brands now refer to this material as ‘vegan leather’, but you can’t fool us. We know it’s pleather.

THE EVENING SKIRT
When you’d like a change from a dress, or you want to dress down your top half, the evening skirt is a very useful addition to your wardrobe. I like to pair mine with a simple cashmere jumper, but you can go the whole hog and opt for a velvet jacket or an equally embellished blazer. I really like this matching set from the Nobody’s Child x Elizabeth Scarlett collection.
I also like a sheer skirt like this one from Dissh. It has a short, built-in under-layer to save your modesty, but if you find a fully sheer skirt, you need to get yourself a simple slip skirt like this one to wear underneath. Slip skirts are also good for avoiding cling when wearing tights.

THE CORDUROY SKIRT
My favourite winter-season fabric is cord; you should know that by now. I actually think this look is a bit low-key Claudia: the tank top, the Princess-Anne-style skirt and the oversized double-breasted coat. But it’s something you could just as easily wear to the office as in the Highlands.

- M&S Brushed Argyle Knitted Vest

THE CHECKED SKIRT
If a full-on tartan kilt feels a little too cosplay for you, but you want to get on board with the trend in a more subtle way, the checked skirt is one for you to think about. My favourite is this one from Essentiel Antwerp as I really like the length and the draping. It’s very Vivienne Westwood but slightly easier to wear. I would keep the rest of the look quite simple when there’s a bit of a statement happening on your bottom half.

THE MINI SKIRT
I love a mini skirt in the winter. It’s so much easier than in the summer. There’s no need to tan or to shave, as a good pair of tights will cover up your pasty, hairy legs a treat. My favourite tights are these at the low end and these at the high end. If you feel a little self-conscious in a shorter skirt, pair it with a longer coat to save your modesty when out and about.

- John Lewis Wool Blend Herringbone Coat
- Gucci Boulevard Loafers
- Sezane Farrow Chocolate Bucket bag
THE MIDI SKIRT
I think a navy midi skirt – be it kilt-style or not – is a wardrobe staple at this time of year. It looks equally as good with a short jacket and long boots as it does with a long coat and chunky loafers. You could also wear it with an oversized jumper if the weather is crisp and clear. Don’t you just love a chunky jumper/no jacket day?
