I spent it all on clothes by the looks of things...

Six easy spring colour combinations

This is basically another take on the ‘3‑colour formula we looked at a few months ago. Actually, I’ve just checked back on that, and it was almost a year ago! Honestly, where does the time go? January and February feel like they go on for nine months apiece, then the rest of the year passes in about six minutes flat. Is that a sign of getting older? I think so.

I can always tell it’s mid-April, though, as my hayfever starts up with a vengeance. I’ve spent most of this week jacked-up on antihistamines trying to suppress sneezes at the most inappropriate times. I went to see a quite serious and moving play and spent most of the second half trying desperately not to explode. The play was called Punch and it is excellent. It’s transferring to the West End in September, I think, so if you’re looking for something good to go to, I can recommend that. I can also recommend The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button (a bit Mumford & Sons, but very endearing and well done) and Titanique, which is just camp as Christmas and a real riot of a show. Proper belly laughs.

Before I go off on too much of a theatrical tangent, let’s get on with the outfits…

NAVY, BROWN & BLUE

These are my new favourite jeans from ME+EM, so they had to feature in this week’s post as I’ve worn them almost every day since I got them. They are the extreme tapered style in toffee. I could have done this whole post purely for my own benefit and written about six ways to wear them as I think they are so versatile. It’s the colour for me: like my brown cords in the winter, it’s surprising how many other colours go with this shade. But for now, let’s style them with a cerulean blue jumper and a navy blazer.

  1. M&S Ribbed Scoop Neck Bra Vest Top
  2. Zara oversize pinstriped blazer
  3. WERFORU Brown studded belt
  4. YMC Bellow knitted jumper
  5. ME + EM Brown Extreme Tapered Jean
  6. Prada Aimée Medium leather shoulder bag
  7. Autry Medalist Leather Trainers (use WMM25 for 25% off)

BUTTER YELLOW, TAN & BLUE

I know that butter yellow has been deemed the colour of the season, but it washes me right out if I wear it near my face so, if I were to dip a toe into this trend, I’d wear it on my bottom half and keep the top a pale blue that I know works for me. I did once have a lemon yellow two-piece that was handed down to me in the 80s from my very cool babysitter. I wore it to watch Live Aid. No, not at Wembley – we wore our best outfits just to sit inside and watch it on the telly.

  1. ME + EM Lightweight Denim Crop Shirt
  2. Love Lori Michelle silver earrings (use code mymoney for 20% off)
  3. Andersons brown suede belt
  4. TK Maxx Velvet Heart light denim jacket
  5. Mint Velvet Yellow Barrel Jeans
  6. Sezane basket bag
  7. M&S Ankle Strap Buckle Flat Sandals

RED, TAN & DENIM BLUE

I think this is my favourite colour mix. You may have guessed by now that I am a big fan of red teamed with almost any shade of brown. On paper it doesn’t feel like it should work, but somehow it really does. Try it and see how you get on.

  1. Jigsaw Short Sleeve Cardigan Top
  2. M&S Denim Relaxed Harrington Jacket
  3. & Other Stories Heart Embellished Keychain
  4. Staud Harlow suede shoulder bag
  5. River Island Red Stripe Ribbed Tank Top
  6. Boden Brompton Wide Leg Trousers
  7. Gola Viper Trainers

RED, KHAKI & CREAM

At this point I should say that denim really is a neutral colour. Like black and white, and possibly leopard, it’s something that goes with everything. If you want to know more about the specific jeans I recommend at all price points, have a look at this post. And if you’re specifically concerned about what to wear with your barrel jeans, I’ve got you covered on that here

  1. ME + EM Cream Polka Dot Lace Tulle Blouse
  2. Anna + Nina Large Sunset Love Hoop Earrings
  3. Hush Cotton Oversized Cropped Shirt
  4. Anthropologie studded leather belt
  5. COS Twine barrel leg jeans
  6. Gave Lux leather shoulder bag
  7. Kinretixia Dachshund bag charm
  8. Boden Iris Snaffle Mule Loafers

GREEN, NAVY & LEOPARD

They say that blue and green should never be seen. I’m not sure who ‘they’ are or why this would ever be a thing, but ‘they’ are wrong. There is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a blue sky against a green field, so think about that when you get dressed. Oh, and add some leopard print while you’re at it.

  1. Monica Vinader Pearl Disc Necklace (code KATEHMV20 for 20% off)
  2. & Other Stories Oversized Slim-Frame Sunglasses
  3. Louise Wade Swallow Pearl Drop Earrings (use code KATESPRING20 for 20% off)
  4. COS Clean cut regular t shirt
  5. M&S Pure Cashmere Crew Neck Relaxed Cardigan
  6. COS Relaxed linen blend wide trousers
  7. Ganni Leopard-print canvas tote bag
  8. Autry Reelwind suede trainers

BABY BLUE, CREAM & TAN

If bright colours are not your bag, then shades of blue, tan and cream work so well together in the spring and summer months. We haven’t quite entered shorts territory yet, but it’s getting close. It’s still that time of year when it’s impossible to really tell what to wear when you get dressed in the morning. Which camp are you in? Still wearing your puffer jacket until it’s really summer? Or are your shorts already out and you’re one of those people sunbathing in the park at the first sniff of sunshine? Personally, I haven’t done the full winter/summer switchover just yet, but I have fake-tanned my legs in case the shorts do make an appearance soon.

  1. Ralph Lauren Classic Fit Cotton Oxford Shirt
  2. Saint Laurent Cat Eye Sunglasses
  3. Uniqlo Linen Blend Jacket
  4. La Redoute Pleated Bermuda Shorts
  5. Air & Grace Tan Woven Leather Handbag
  6. Russell & Bromley Leather Fisherman Sandals
  7. Liberty silk square scarf

Next week I think we might have a look at blazers or possibly stripes, or maybe push the boat out and do both.
