Oh, I do love a good jacket. Summer is great and all, but there’s something about a little chill in the air that brings on the excitement of knowing you’ll be able to wear your nice autumnal jackets once again. I have lots from years gone by that will be brought out from the youngest son’s wardrobe and put downstairs into the cupboard of current-wear coats and jackets. Also known as ‘The Cupboard of Doom’ due to all the other stuff in there that somehow mounts up and up. Got nowhere to put those boxes I think we might use again someday? Cupboard of Doom. Cushions from outdoor chairs? Cupboard of Doom. Scarves, hats, gloves, umbrellas, all stuffed into a bag for life? Cupboard of Doom. You get the picture. Oh, to have a utility room…
But what jacket styles are we to be looking at this autumn, I hear you ask. Well, I have some ideas for you…
THE BROWN SUEDE OR LEATHER JACKET
Good luck even tracking down one of these now. It seems the world and his wife have made a stampede towards the high street to get their mitts on a suede jacket as most are already sold out and it’s not even October. I did say back in August that they’d be a ‘thing’, so congrats to you if you managed to bag one. If you’re still searching, then vintage is the way to go. On last inspection there were quite a few good ones on Vinted, and on Rokit, or check your local charity shop. Also, never discount the men’s department, as the style for this one is definitely slightly masculine and oversized.

THE BARN JACKET
I’ve heard it called a barn jacket, a worker jacket, a canvas jacket, a donkey jacket… It’s basically an old style under many new names. You probably already have one somewhere. You can blame Miuccia Prada for this resurgence. She showed worn-in styles in navy, khaki, brown and hunter green layered over tasselled and sheer skirts in the Prada spring/summer catwalk collection and where Prada leads, the high street follows. Think of this one as a chic version of your ‘walking the dog’ jacket.

THE NICE RAIN JACKET
I say ‘nice rain jacket’ but, let’s face it, I basically mean a Barbour. Which following on from ‘walking the dog’ chic has always been my outdoor ‘it’s a bit cold and it might rain’ jacket of choice. It’s no longer the preserve of young farmers, and you’re just as likely to see a Barbour on Bond Street as you are in a sheep field in Shropshire. Buy once and buy well. Barbour can also fix and re-wax your outwear if it starts to get worn out.

THE QUILTED JACKET
I am sure that at least 80% of you already have a green quilted jacket. This style is going nowhere, so bring it out again for this season. Perfect for casual days when the weather’s a bit chilly and gloomy. Which, let’s face it, happens a lot in this country during these autumnal months.

THE OVERSIZED BLAZER
Something a little bit smarter to throw over your knitwear. I promise I will do a full cardigan post soon as a lot of you have asked for that. We all need a couple of good cardis, especially if you work in an air-conditioned office that inexplicably varies in temperature throughout the day. Or if you’re prone to hot flushes. Although I can give thanks to the right dose of HRT for stopping my onslaught of those. I was having 20 to 30 a day until I finally went to the doctor and she prescribed the goods.
If you’re after a designer blazer for less, I can recommend Edit Second Hand, those ladies always come up with the goods.

- Hush Pure Wool Double Faced Blazer
- Jigsaw Heckfield Suede Tote Bag
- Uniqlo Corduroy Wide Trousers
- Adidas Originals Gazelle Trainers
THE CORDUROY JACKET
Be still, my beating corduroy heart: ’tis the season once more. As it’s been warm this week, I haven’t done the full summer/winter wardrobe switchover just yet, but I did unsheathe the corduroy from its summer resting place under the bed. It’s ready and waiting for the chill with all the cosy comfort it can provide.
- Toast Organic Cord Swing Jacket
- Uniqlo Lambswool Crew Neck Jumper
- COS Indigo Denim Arch Jeans
- Staud Harlow buckled suede shoulder bag
- & Other Stories Puff-Sleeve Denim Blouse
- Adidas Originals Handball Spezial Trainers
I think these outfits have been my personal favourites from the past couple of weeks. I want to wear them all.
