6 ways to wear long denim shorts

Have you got yourself a pair of long denim shorts? Or ‘jorts’, if you will. I know they won’t necessarily be a crowd pleaser, but I have been enjoying this longer length being a trend. Think of them as short jeans if you’re scared of shorts. You don’t even need to part with any money to have a pair: the ones I’ve been wearing the most I made myself by just hacking a bit off an old pair of jeans. If you’re going to do this, you need to make sure the jeans you modify are of the wide leg variety. This look won’t work with a slim fit – you’d be veering deep into pedal-pusher territory and, despite that being à la mode this summer with the serious fashionistas, it’s not one I wish to partake in.

My teenagers raised an eyebrow when I started wearing my long denim shorts: ‘Got your jorts on, I see.’ I’m not sure if that was meant as a good thing. They wear them, and they could either be annoyed that I’m dressing like them or it could have been a vague seal of approval. I daren’t ask as – as we all know – we should never ask teenagers questions, we should only ever answer theirs.

Let’s have a look at six ways to style your long denim shorts…

WITH A BIT OF COLOUR

I am happy to inform you that the ‘pop of red’ trend isn’t going anywhere for the upcoming season. This is evident in the new collections that are trickling through. This Albaray knitted tank top is a case in point, and it’s very much on my wish list for early autumn. I also had to restrain myself from buying these Sporty & Rich Adidas trainers last week. I. Do. Not. Need. More. Adidas. Trainers.

  1. H&M Cat-eye sunglasses
  2. Missoma Mini Tidal Hoop Earrings
  3. Ganni Future White Jersey Relaxed T‑Shirt
  4. Albaray Knitted button up tank top
  5. Aligne Gres Denim Bermuda Shorts
  6. Le Bon Shoppe Girlfriend Socks
  7. Adidas x Sporty & Rich Spezial embellished trainers

FOR THE GIRLY GIRLS

You CAN make your long denim shorts a bit more feminine. Pair with a nice blouse and some cute flats, and add an oversized blazer to balance it all out. I’m definitely going to try a version of this look next week.

  1. Ganni Liberty Floral Printed Cotton Poplin Peplum Blouse
  2. H&M Ribbed vest top
  3. Isabel Marant Praia Small Raffia Tote Bag
  4. Bershka baggy longline denim shorts
  5. Asra Neve Tan Leather Ballet Flats
  6. Selected Femme Oversized Blazer

A DOUBLE DENIM SUIT

Would you dare? I think this is an interesting take on ‘sort-of-smart’: a denim blazer and matching shorts. I’d wear with a pair of loafers, socks optional – I do like that it’s now the trend to wear ankle socks with loafers. Certainly helps with any blister-related issues you may be having.

  1. Mint Velvet Silver Tone Layered Necklace
  2. COS Clean cut t shirt
  3. H&M Crossbody bag
  4. Albaray denim blazer
  5. Albaray denim pleated shorts
  6. Ganni Ombre Glitter Chunky Charm Loafers
  7. Glassworks cotton Varsity socks

A NEUTRAL PALETTE

When we were in Lisbon I saw a girl wearing a variation of this outfit and I thought she looked so cool. Admittedly, she was about 23, but age should never stop you trying things. You can experiment with looks you see on others no matter what your age. What’s the worst that could happen? I will be digging out my Bostons Birks to try them with my socks and shorts very soon.

  1. Arket Cotton-Linen Overshirt
  2. Abercrombie  Camp Collar Cropped Summer Linen-Blend shirt
  3. Cotton On 90s Baggy Denim Jorts
  4. & Other Stories Large Suede Tote
  5. Birkenstock Boston SFB Suede Clogs
  6. Rock + Ruby Fern Elsie Cotton Socks

AN EVENING LOOK

Another trend we are not seeing the back of in the new season is waistcoats. Worn on their own for now and layered later. The longer length seems to be the new style, shaped to give a sleeker silhouette. Will work with your wide-leg jeans and trousers, but there’s no reason not to give it a try with your long shorts for now. Pair with a dainty shoe and accessories to lift the all-black look up a level.

  1. Aligne Leo Long Waistcoat
  2. & Other Stories Asymmetrical Beaded Necklace
  3. COS double hoop clip on earrings
  4. Weekday Astro Denim Loose Baggy Shorts
  5. Mint Velvet Black Leather Studded Bag
  6. Gradinery Rhinestone Studded Flats

DARE TO WEAR A HEEL?

Personally I wouldn’t, as just looking at these shoes is giving me the fear. I do too much walking to even contemplate any heel over about 3cms and, even then, that’s a stretch. But I do love the idea of baggy shorts and loose-fit shirts worn with heels. Makes a feminine look out of an essentially very masculine outfit.

  1. H&M blue stripe shirt
  2. Wilhelmina Garcia Heart necklace
  3. COS red leather clutch bag
  4. H&M Low Loose Denim Shorts
  5. Coach Coach-ella Rainbow Gold-Tone Signet Ring
  6. & Other Stories Sleek Leather Sandals

For those who fear the baggy shorts, I will counteract this post next week and do one on skirts.
