The Summer Trouser Edit: 7 Styles for Every Occasion

We’ve had a look at shorts, dresses and general hot-weather outfits over the past few weeks, so I thought this time we’d turn our attention to summer trousers. I know not everyone feels comfortable getting their legs out and, let’s be honest, it takes time and effort to get them ready for public consumption. You think you’ve suitably de-fuzzed yourself, but without fail there are always rogue (and stupidly long) hairs that suddenly appear in random places when you least expect them. Sometimes you just feel safer in a pair of trousers.

Talking of safe, I’d like to say thank you so much to everyone who got in touch on Instagram after I got mugged in Barcelona last week. I had a lovely time at the Tribe yoga and fitness retreat. Unfortunately, my Zen only lasted about an hour once I got into the city, where my necklaces were ripped from my neck in broad daylight. But we live and learn, and from the responses I received, there are definitely more good than bad people in the world, so thank you.

Let’s have a look at seven styles of summer trousers. Hopefully, there’s something for everyone.

THE LIGHTWEIGHT JEANS

You know me, I’ll wear jeans at all times of the year and to almost any event. But in summer, you don’t want your heavy denim. A nice lightweight style will serve you much better. I have this pair from Free People and they’re lovely and loose. One of my default looks at this time of year is a light pair of jeans, a white summer blouse and a pair of tan sandals. If you don’t already have these from Amazon, get them. They’re super comfortable and go with everything.

  1. Zara Romantic Cotton Blouse
  2. Tilly Sveaas Gold Moi + Toi Curb Clip T Necklace
  3. Wyse X Finlay Ledbury Sunglasses
  4. Benetton Braided leather belt
  5. Ba&sh Rallo Cotton Jacket
  6. Free People Truro Baggy Puddle Jeans
  7. Bimba Y Lola Large Natural Raffia Bag
  8. Amazon Essentials Strappy Sandals

THE BALLOON PANTS

We touched on these a few weeks ago, and I’m now seeing them everywhere. They’re a great pair of trousers for your holiday, but I think they work just as well around town or for evenings out back home. Pair them with a cute blazer and some bold costume jewellery.

  1. Zara Cropped Short Sleeve Blazer
  2. M&S Textured Chipping Drop Earrings
  3. Rixo Zodiac T Shirt
  4. Arket Balloon Cotton Trousers
  5. H&M Mesh shopper bag
  6. Arket Leather Ballerina Shoes

THE STRIPES

I’ve always had a soft spot for striped trousers in the summer. I can trace it back to a pair I’d wear to go raving in the early 90s. I often wonder what happened to all the clothes I loved back then. Literally the only two items I still have are a pair of Maharishi trousers – which I’m sure I kept because, at the time, they were the most expensive item of clothing I had ever bought (and I got them at a sample sale) – and a vintage denim jacket that I still wear, despite the fact it’s literally falling apart. It’s only being held together by the patches I’ve sewn on over the years to cover the holes.

  1. ME  + EM Cream Stripe Tee
  2. COS Raffia Bucket Hat
  3. ME + EM Stripe Crop Track Pants
  4. House of Bruar Leather Trim Basket Bag
  5. Free People Lemon Denim Jacket
  6. Mango Cross Strap Leather Sandals

THE F*CKING RED TROUSERS

Last year, I got a fantastic pair of f*cking red trousers from ME+EM (shout-out to anyone who remembers this very niche blogspot page) and I fully intend to wear them again this year. I even managed to get the matching blazer in the sale, so now I just need the right occasion to wear the full suit. I might actually wear it to Wimbledon later this month. If I do, I’d definitely be able to spot myself on the telly.

And I’m aware that I’ve featured these Archies flip-flops at least three times now, but they’ve been a revelation for me as someone who could never find a comfortable pair of flip-flops. Every other style seemed to rub somewhere, but these are like walking on air. Those targeted Instagram ads really worked on me and, for once, they didn’t lie. I’ve got them in three colours now.

  1. Loel Mixed Link Chain Necklace
  2. Uniqlo Square Neck Bra Vest
  3. Ray Ban Aviator Sunglasses
  4. Loel Gold Tassel Earrings
  5. Mango Lyocell Linen Blend Jacket
  6. Zara Balloon Pleat Trousers
  7. ASOS leather weave tote bag
  8. Archies Flip Flops

THE TAILORED TROUSERS

If I don’t wear the red suit to Wimbledon, I might wear something like this. It’s very ‘Anyone for tennis?’ – although in my case, that means watching it rather than playing it. I was unlucky in the ballot this year, but my friend Paul wasn’t (he actually plays tennis too). As I took him when I managed to get tickets a couple of years ago, he’s returning the favour. It really is a lovely day out. And the only time of the year I ever drink Pimms.

  1. Whistles Ultimate Ribbed Scoop Vest
  2. Boden Salisbury Puff Sleeve Jacket
  3. FP Jerry Oversized Sunglasses
  4. White Stuff Striped Webbing Loop Belt
  5. Boden Regent Wide Leg Trousers
  6. Le Creuset Insulated Water Bottle
  7. Ralph Lauren Wimbledon Canvas Tote
  8. Coach Soft Sneakers

THE WIDE LEG CROP TROUSERS

They could be culottes, they could be Palazzo pants, they could even just be long shorts. Call them what you will – they’re perfect for those hot summer days when you’re after a bit of coverage but you also want a fresh breeze around your thighs. The wider, the better, when it comes to this style.

  1. Mint Velvet Red Beaded Charm Necklace
  2. & Other Stories Angular Cat Eye Sunglasses
  3. Dissh Cotton Asymmetric Hem T shirt
  4. Baukjen Organic Cotton Cropped Bomber Jacket
  5. M&S Cotton Cropped Palazzo Trousers
  6. COS Bateau Leather Tote Bag
  7. Ralph Lauren Heeled Sandals

THE LINEN TROUSERS

I’ll do a full linen blog soon, as it really is the fabric of summer. You just have to get your head around the fact that it will crease, but that’s OK. It’s linen – that’s what it does. Your little steamer will come into its own to help with that, and it’s much quicker and easier than getting the iron out. If you don’t already have one, wait a week or so as they always seem to be half price in the Amazon Prime sale. I’ll alert the group if I see they’ve been reduced.

Also, I bought these bralettes from M&S last month and they are so comfortable. They don’t show under my vest tops or white T‑shirts either, which is another tick from me.

  1. M&S 3 Pack Seamless V‑Neck Bra Tops
  2. Ray Ban State Street Sunglasses
  3. Monica Vinader Deia Medium Hoop Earrings
  4. WNU Linen Stripe Boyfriend Shirt
  5. M&S Pure Linen Wide Leg Trousers
  6. Rixo x Dragon Diffuson Amoria Leather Bag
  7. Merit Tinted Lip Oil
  8. Grenson Queen Leather Sandals

I will try and do that comfortable summer shoes blog next week. Apologies for the delay on that.
