I spent it all on clothes by the looks of things...

Six outfit ideas for right now

I know I promised dresses, but I just haven’t been inspired enough by the dresses I’ve seen on the high street recently. I’m sure they will come along soon though, now that the sun actually seems to be making an appearance. That said, I did pay a visit to the Daily Dress Edit pop-up in London this week. That really DID inspire me to start wearing my dresses again. Isabel has curated another wonderful collection of brands. A joy to try on. They’ve also done some collaborations using deadstock fabric that are available to buy onlineMy favourite was this denim number from Aligne.

I have added a few new items to my wardrobe over the past couple of weeks. So I thought I would run through six outfit ideas for right now, think easy late spring looks…

BEST JEANS EVER (possibly)

I am aware that every month I seem to find the ‘best jeans ever’, but I think these have topped them all so far. I had never set foot in a Sessun shop until last week. Now I want to own almost everything they make. Think everyday French chic. Annoyingly, they seem to have import duties when buying online from their site, but I HAVE found THE jeans at a UK stockist online. If you are London-based, there are stores in Marylebone, Hampstead and Shoreditch. Definitely worth a visit. One of my annoying teenagers asked why I was wearing my jeans back to front (due to the placing of the front pockets) but comments like that are best ignored. I’d say take your regular size if you fancy them.

  2. M&S round cat eye sunglasses
  3. Sessun vintage blue Johnny O Jeans
  4. Boden cropped fluffy cardigan (use code E9M6 for extra 20% off)
  5. Rio Salade multi bead bracelet
  6. Adidas Originals Bermuda trainers
  7. Mango Lina straw cross body bag

A GOOD BLACK DRESS

It might just be me, but it still doesn’t feel quite right for a floral summer dress. Three times this past week I went out thinking I was safe without an umbrella or a jacket. I know, a schoolboy error on my part. When will I learn? But a black dress is a safer option. You can still put on your secret leggings* underneath and if you’re brave you could risk a chunky sandal. I’d throw either a black linen blazer or a good denim jacket over either of these dresses.

*Not an actual thing you can buy, just a pair of cheap leggings cut to the right length so you can wear them under dresses or skirts when it’s not warm enough for a full bare leg. I know regular readers will be aware of this, so this is for those new to the group. Welcome, I hope you will be very happy here.

YES YOU CAN WEAR WHITE JEANS

Especially if they’re these from Jigsaw. I’d been looking for a wide-leg, cropped, off-white pair for a while, but it had been a fruitless search until now. These are a lovely fit. I don’t know why they don’t do them in a 29 (my usual waist size) but I got the 28 and they fit very well. A tiny bit tight but I can feel they will loosen up after a few wears. Also – which is important for white jeans – they are made of denim that’s thick enough so that your knickers don’t show through. And a big recommendation for this White Stuff jacket, as owned by my friend Arlene who got stopped twice in the street last week by stylish ladies asking about it. It’s basically the perfect spring/summer denim jacket.

YELLOW FEVER

This one is in for a splash of colour, but also to big up the Uniqlo ‘Tardis’ bag again. They’ve just brought it out in more colours, including a great yellow version. I use mine (I have green and pink) all the time. It’s the perfect hands-free, everyday bag. I use it for the football: I can fit in a drink, snacks, season tickets, sunglasses, a mini umbrella and a wallet, AND have room for any bits of shopping I need to pick up on the way home. Honestly, if you haven’t got one already, get it. Thank me later. The only problem is which colour to get. So many to choose from.

DO YOU LIKE MY LIGHT SWEATER?

It’s the perfect time of year to bust out that lovely, lightweight jumper you’ve been waiting to wear. You know, the one that you can’t really layer over anything other than a vest. The one that’s not quite warm enough in March, maybe too warm in July, but is perfect from mid May to mid June. Do we all have some of those clothes that need very specific weather conditions in order to wear them? Or am I the only fool that seems to collect those items? Suede ballet pumps are another example – can’t be too cold, can’t have any rain on the horizon, has to be dry and reasonably warm. Soggy, cold feet are not something to savour.

P.S. I bought this Sezane bag back in January and it’s fast becoming one of my all-time favourite smart bags. So classic and goes with lots of outfits.

BRING OUT THE BIKER

You’ve all still got one of these, right? I hadn’t worn mine for a while, but it’s perfect for these in-between days so it came out again this week. It’s still a very useful, hard-working jacket. Throw it over your favourite jeans and black T‑shirt. Just add some fancy shoes (how cool are these diamanté studded flats from Mango? A ‘homage’ to the Alaïa ones but 92% cheaper!) and a bit of a bold lip and you can go anywhere. For a bold lip, in case anyone is interested, my favourite is number 188 from the L’Oréal Volume Matte range. It’s a pinkish-red, or a reddish-pink, and I always feel ‘dressed up’ when I wear it.

Next week I will be doing ‘The best plain white T‑shirts’. I’ve done some research and found six great ones at varying prices that I highly recommend.
