WearsMyMoney

I spent it all on clothes by the looks of things...

It Was All Yellow

Can I stop you right there if you’re about to say ‘But Yellow just doesn’t suit me’… I’m here to tell you that I think there is a yellow out there for everyone and wearing it really DOES make you feel just a little bit brighter. The general colouring ‘rules’ are:

  • Light to Fair Skin — Go for mustard and more muted yellows.
  • Medium and Olive Skin — Bright yellow is your friend, it will make you glow
  • Dark Skin — Literally you should be wearing yellow all the time, it looks great on you.

Although saying that, I have fair skin (practically blue legs in the winter without a liberal coating of Vita Liberata) and I love a bit of bright yellow. To be fair it does look a bit better with a tan, but I’m not going to let that stop me…

THE BRIGHT YELLOW JUMPER

I think bright yellow goes best with blue denim, so refer back to last weeks post for the best jeans to wear with it. If you want a big injection of colour in to your wardrobe then this v neck sweater from AND/OR is your thing, or if you have a budget that stretches to cashmere, then this one from John Lewis is the stuff of sunshine dreams. I was immediately drawn to both when I was in the shop the other week. I never really wore yellow until last year. Now I love it. I even got my mum to knit me a Charlie Brown jumper for my birthday. Unfortunately it’s made from such thick wool that I can only wear it on freezing cold days or else I’ll be a sweaty mess.

Talking of handmade things, if you’re after some great jewellery, check out my friend Zara’s pieces. These gold plated Heartbeat Hoop Earrings are one of my favourites.

THE YELLOW CARDIGAN

We all know by now that I love a good Cardigan. Maybe it’s an age thing. Maybe I like to pull an open cardigan together and cross my arms, looking wistfully into the middle distance so I feel like Barbara Hershey in Beaches. Minus the Lip Fillers, the beach house and Bette Midler as a best friend. Maybe I just like them because they are easy to take on and off when you get too hot. That’s probably more like it, but I prefer reason one. Try a yellow cardigan over an otherwise all black outfit. Use yellow accents on your accessories if you fancy a matchy matchy bit of cohesion. If yellow boots are a step too far, maybe try yellow laces in your BDMs.

THE YELLOW TROUSERS

If you are still feeling a bit nervous about wearing yellow so close to your face, then maybe a pair of trousers could be the thing for you? Well, I’m only really thinking about these Kin trousers, because they are my favourites. I have them in Orange from last season. They are such a great shape; wide, without being too wide, tapered at the ankle, and with a little turn up of the hem, the perfect ankle bearing trousers. I’d wear with my wide fit shirt from Cos, which I’m glad to say is still available this season, and a black blazer to smarten it all up.

2. Hush Black Shelly Blazer
3. Kin Yellow Balloon Trousers

THE YELLOW SKIRT

One for Spring this one. Can’t see it working with tights. But, don’t forget the secret leggings trick. I’m sure you all know that by now. but to recap for those at the back, wearing short leggings under a dress or skirt is a warm way to show a bit of bare ankle without freezing to death in February. I am seriously longing for a bit of Spring. It may be a short month, but February is often the worst for weather. That ‘Fake Spring’ we had this time last year is but a distant memory right now.

THE PASTEL YELLOW JUMPER

If you’re scared of yellow or just want a bit of an entry point into this trend, then maybe a more subtle shade is the one for you. This colour looks as great with Khaki as it does with denim. Sidebar, there’s currently a lot of last season discounted Ganni on The Outnet right now. Also, Baum und Pferdgarten, which is one of my favourite brands at the minute, but quite expensive at full price.

2. Hush Homewear Fairfax Holdall

4. New Look Balloon Leg Cargo Trousers
5. H&M White & Yellow Mesh Trainers

I’ve had a fair few requests to do worky outfits recently, so I may do that next week. We shall see.
