8 outfits for July that are all in the sale

A lot of the summer sales have started, so I thought that, for this week, we’d simply look at eight outfit ideas – all made up of items that are currently discounted. Because we all love a bargain, don’t we?

I’m sure more retailers will have joined the summer-sale party by the time you read this post, but I had to prepare it a few days in advance of publishing, so these are the best things I have found so far. Always remember my sales rules to stop yourself from getting swept away by the fact that something is cheaper than it once was. Those basic rules are:

Did you contemplate buying it at full price?
Can you find five ways to wear it?
Does it fill a hole in your wardrobe?
Do you love it?

Of course, rules are made to be broken, but it’s always good to keep this checklist in the back of your mind when browsing. Let’s crack on and see what I’ve found for you.

THE SUMMER DRESS

Summer has peaked somewhat early this year, but hopefully there are many more sunny days ahead of us – in which case, it’s always nice to have a strappy, loose and flowy dress that you can pull out to wear with your sandals on those Phil Collins days – No Jacket Required.

SUMMER SHORTS STYLE

Of course, if you’re hankering after a pair of denim cut-offs, you can always make them yourself. My top tip here is to make them out of old baggy jeans. As we’ve discussed before, if your shorts are too tight around the thighs, you will feel like a sausage trying to break out of its casing.

A CLASSIC DRESS FOR ALL OCCASIONS

It doesn’t have to be navy, but navy is always ladylike, in my opinion. A classic hue that goes with so many others. If you want your sales bargain to last for years to come, this is a good bet. I have a navy ME+EM dress that I got for a steal in their sale three years ago and I still love it and wear it often – something I pull out when I want to look smart but not overdone.

A SUMMER CO-ORD

You know my feelings about these. I love a matching set, but I also love to wear them with other things. It’s always great to pack a co-ord when you’re going on holiday. This one from ME+EM is definitely one I considered buying at full price. I very nearly did when I saw it calling me from the window of their shop in Marylebone last month. I’m glad I held out for the sale.

JUST JEANS AND A NICE TOP

Not just for July, but for any time of the year. However, during the warmer summer months, I would substitute the ubiquitous black blazer with a white one to lighten things up a bit. Wear with a nice cami top. If anyone has come across a really good strapless bra that would work with tops like this, please do let me know. I have one, but it’s not great, so I’m in the market for a better one.

MAINLY MONOCHROME

There’s something about all black or all white (or a mix of both) that works so well in the summer months. I think a tan definitely helps here, be it real or fake. I’ve been topping mine up in both ways this past week. I am a nicer person when I have a tan.

FOR COOLER DAYS

When Phil is away on tour and a jacket IS required. A nice light one is a good bet. Even better if it’s denim or khaki, because you know it’ll go with everything.

A PRETTY BLOUSE

More and more, this is my go-to when it comes to a casual party/dinner date/theatre trip. A little bit of fancy for the top half means you can wear your favourite jeans on your bottom half without feeling as though you haven’t made an effort. I wore almost this exact outfit, on the right, to a party back in April. Love this top and these jeans.

A SMALL SELECTION OF SWIMSUITS
