I spent it all on clothes by the looks of things...

7 outfits I’d like to wear in October

The nights are drawing in, the pumpkins are appearing in the supermarkets (and on our allotment), thoughts turn to arguing over the thermostat and we start retrieving those coats from the back of the wardrobe. Or, in my case, the back of my son’s wardrobe, as space is tight and everyone has to give up some of theirs to my clothes.

This week’s post is a selfish one. I tend to use these monthly ‘outfits I’d like to wear’ posts as a way of planning looks around things I already own, mixed in with some similar items and a few new pieces I have my eye on. I know a lot of you do the same, and that’s what I’m here for, so let’s get straight into it.

THE COAT I CRAVE

I don’t need a new coat – but then, who really needs any new clothes? For most of us, it’s a want, not a need. Right now, the thing I’m craving is this leopard coat from Rixo. I tried on a few of their coats and jackets last week in the gorgeous Kings Road store. If you’re in London, stop by and check it out, as it’s exactly how retail should be. A lovely experience. I wouldn’t have thought a full-length leopard coat was something I was missing, but this one would elevate any fairly ordinary outfit. I’d wear it with my current favourite baggy jeans from Free People and a simple white shirt (with a cardi, if it’s chilly).

The Rixo coat is slightly oversized, so size down if you want it more fitted. I plan on getting it in my usual size so I can wear a chunky sweater underneath when the weather gets colder. I tend to buy all my coats in a larger size for exactly this reason.

  1. Arket Regular-Fit Poplin Shirt
  2. & Other Stories brushed knitted cardigan
  3. Mint Velvet Leather Slim Belt
  4. Free People Truro Baggy Jeans
  5. Sezane Milo Classic bag
  6. Rixo Milly Bohemia Leopard Coat
  7. Adidas Handball Spezial Trianers

MY FAVOURITE SUEDE JACKET

I kind of resisted the suede trend last year, but when I did a job for Mint Velvet back in August, I picked out this and I’ve worn it a lot since. It’s the perfect suede blazer: classic, simple and works so well with another favourite pair of jeans, the Miro by Citizens of Humanity. They’re stupidly expensive for denim, but I’m working on the price-per-wear value (also as of the time of writing they are slightly discounted at Mytheresa) . I love CoH jeans – they’re the most flattering and best-fitting jeans ever, in my opinion.

  1. Boden Eva Cropped Cashmere Cardigan
  2. Suermondt Knitwear Checkmate Neckerchief
  3. Missoma Sculptural Chubby Small Hoop Earrings
  4. Mint Velvet Tan Suede Blazer
  5. Massimo Dutti Slim Leather Belt
  6. Citizens Of Humanity Miro barrel jeans
  7. Massimo Dutti Nappa Leather Maxi Tote Bag
  8. Flattered Indigo Suede Chocolate Boot

THE WEAR ANYWHERE JOGGERS

I mean, obviously, if you work in the City or you’re going to a wedding, then no – but I’ve recently discovered the joy of the Adidas Firebird tracksuit bottoms. I’ve worn them with trainers and a sweatshirt, of course, but I almost prefer styling them like I would regular trousers: with a nice jumper, some loafers and a great coat.

  1. Uniqlo 100% Merino V Neck Jumper
  2. Mint Velvet Gold Tone Layered Necklace
  3. Arket Lily Signature T Shirt
  4. Adidas Classic Firebird Loose Track Pants
  5. Free People Baby Emerson Tote Bag
  6. Massimo Dutti Long Double Breasted Wool Coat
  7. Grenson Susanna Leather Moccasins

THE SMARTEST CORD TROUSERS

You can always count on ME+EM to make the best trousers on the high street. Their tailoring is what keeps me going back. Also, who doesn’t love a good pair of cord trousers in October? These are a touch too long for me, so I had to get an inch taken off the bottom as I don’t often wear heels, but if you’re around 5’5 to 5’7 they would be perfect full length and worn with a good pair of block-heel boots like these bad boys from Arket.

  1. Boden Cotton Lace Trim Top
  2. Massimo Dutti Short Wool Blend Jacket
  3. ME + EM Luxe Straight Cord Trousers
  4. Coach Chain Tabby Shoulder Bag
  5. Chinti & Parker Black Wool-Cashmere Tank
  6. Arket Tortoise-Heel Sock Boots

THE GO WITH ANYTHING BOOTS

Talking of boots, I bought these from John Lewis in black in 2023, and I wore them so much that I ended up getting them in brown last year as well. Perfect everyday boots, and very comfortable too. I’ve got my eye on this recycled cashmere jumper from Reformation. I’m hoping to track it down in New York next week as it might be a tiny bit cheaper there. Not much is less expensive in the States these days, but I think US brands are still a slightly better price over there than in the UK.

  1. Reformation Cashmere Boyfriend Sweater
  2. H&M Printed T Shirt
  3. Zara Reversible Double Faced Jacket
  4. COS Bay Barrel Leg Jeans
  5. Arket Leather Cross Body Bag
  6. John Lewis Purcie Leather Chelsea Boots

A TIMELESS COAT

I have this Jigsaw coat in a mid brown colour. I got it 5 years ago and I think it’s the epitome of a smart winter coat. It’s 100% wool (which a lot of high street coats are not) and SO soft. It’s the perfect shape, perfect length and a timeless style.  They make it in different colours every year. This year it’s in taupe, a dark brow and these seasons ‘hue-du-jour’, burgundy  I’m very tempted to repeat buy it in that colour as it’s so nice.

  1. Mango Merino Wool Polo Sweater
  2. Barbour Tartan Scarf
  3. Monica Vinader Reversible Gemstone hoops
  4. Jigsaw Wool Maxi City Coat
  5. Hush Taylor Wide Leg Trousers
  6. Vintage Louis Vuitton Speedy bag 30
  7. M&S Leather Loafers

THE BEST LONG SLEEVE T

This seems to be turning into a ‘best basics’ post, but that’s OK. Basics might not be that exciting, but once you’ve found the right ones, you can build almost any outfit around them. COS make the best T‑shirts – both long sleeve and short sleeve. It’s the ‘clean cut ones that I like best, as the neckline sits at just the right height to layer under a crew neck jumper. They’re also the ideal length, sitting nicely on the waist without being so cropped that you risk flashing your gut any time you raise your arms.

  1. COS Clean Cut Long Sleeve T Shirt
  2. Sobelle Vintage Owl Charm Necklace
  3. The White Company Reading Glasses
  4. Aligne Hampton Knitted Cardigan
  5. Boden Primrose Navy Cord Trousers
  6. M&S Suede Tote Bag
  7. Uniqlo Ribbed Grey Socks
  8. Hush Leather Tie Loafers

I’m going to be away next weekend, but I’ll try to do a simple coats round-up before I go as I have had quite a few ask for that.
