7 Outfits I Would Like To Wear In September

There’s something so sweet about September. I know that summer is ending, but it’s not quite gone yet. There could still be days for shorts and summer dresses, but the layers are starting to make an appearance and the jackets we haven’t needed for a while can come back out. Maybe it’s not quite full-on knitwear weather yet, but you’ll definitely need a couple of light sweaters. It’s also the time to think about new shoes: a school throwback that I will never get over. I LOVED shopping for new school shoes. I’ll do a proper autumn shoes post soon, as I think we all deserve a new pair – even though we haven’t outgrown our last pair and they don’t have to be flat, sensible and black now that we are adults.

For today’s post, I’m looking forward to wearing things I already have in my wardrobe. In other words, it’s a purely selfish one, for me, but I hope you can take a few ideas from it, too.

BARREL JEANS AND BROGUES

Or loafers. Essentially, any nice chunky shoe that felt a bit much over the summer months can now get another airing. I bought a pair very similar to these last year, and I’m looking forward to wearing them again this month with a bomber-style jacket and a simple white T‑shirt. Oh, and barrel jeans are not going anywhere. If you’re yet to take the plunge, thinking they were just a flash-in-the-pan trend, they are here to stay. If you’re looking for an entry-level pair, I can recommend these from Abercrombie or these from Mint Velvet. Not too exaggerated – just a nice and gentle curved shape.

  1. Arket Checked Zip Jacket
  2. Monica Vinader Rio Gemstone Necklace (use code KATEHMV20 for discount)
  3. Arket Heavyweight T‑Shirt
  4. ME + EM Reversible Leather Belt
  5. Abercrombie Mid Rise Barrel Jeans
  6. M&S Suede Tote Bag
  7. Jelly Cat Croissant Plush Keyring
  8. Sezane Candice Loafers

SLIP SKIRT AND BARN JACKET

Just like those barrel jeans, the barn jacket is still very much a trend this season. I’m extremely happy about this because, at last count, I have four. They’re all different, you understand, and I’d wear them even if fashion dictated they weren’t the ‘in thing’ anymore. Apparently, being a Capricorn means being afflicted with the urge to buy multiples of the same thing once I decide I like it. I’ve even been known to buy exactly the same pair of jeans twice, just in case I somehow ‘break’ the first pair. Idiot.

I bought a lace-trim satin skirt a bit like this one on Vinted last month. I’m yet to wear it as I think it will look best with an oversized knit rather than a T‑shirt, so I’ll be trying out this look soon.

  1. Decadorn Sea Treasure Necklace
  2. New Look Stone Contrast Collar Midi Barn Jacket
  3. Navy Grey ‘The Weekend’ relaxed fit wool jumper
  4. Massimo Dutti Contrast lace-trimmed skirt
  5. John Lewis Woven Leather Tote Bag
  6. M&S Leather Loafers

COLOUR BLOCKING

Is ‘colour blocking’ the right term? Maybe ‘tonal dressing’ is a better fit. Basically, it’s wearing everything the same colour, though the shades don’t have to match exactly. For me, this will be easier to do with navy, since I already have lots of navy items in my wardrobe, but burgundy looks like one of the stand-out colours for A/W so I’ve gone with that here.

  1. Jigsaw Fine Merino Raglan T‑shirt
  2. Mango Straight-fit suit jacket
  3. Dehanche Hollyhock croc-effect leather belt
  4. H&M Wide Tailored Trousers
  5. Accurist Rectangle Ladies Watch
  6. Demelier The Midi New York
  7. YSL Le Loafer Cassandre leather penny loafers

BLUE SHIRT/NAVY JUMPER/CHINOS COMBO

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Surely we can all replicate this classic September style with pieces we already own. I’ve recently been getting more into the untucked-shirt look – it’s quite freeing, and you can pop your jumper on top and leave the shirt hem hanging out underneath. Add a good pair of flats, and maybe a neckerchief if you’re feeling that way inclined.

  1. Missoma Sculptural Chubby Dome Hoop Earrings
  2. Mint Velvet Navy Print Square Neck Scarf
  3. WNU Devon Cotton Jumper
  4. M&S Pure Cotton Striped Boxy Shirt
  5. Arket Barrel-Leg Trousers
  6. Mint Velvet Maci Tan Suede Bucket Bag
  7. Massimo Dutti Studded Ballet flats

CLASSIC PRADA STYLE ON THE HIGH STREET

Regular readers will know how enamoured I am with Prada and Miu Miu, but funds mean I can’t dress head-to-toe in designer, so I generally look to the high street for good ‘homages’. I’ll splurge on bags and shoes, though, because they tend to last longer AND you’re never going to get too large or too small for them. I have designer shoes that are 10–15 years old that I still wear on a regular basis. See also: bags. Don’t forget to check the designer resale sites for a better bargain. Vestiaire Collective is my favourite; you can offer your own price like Vinted but, unlike Vinted, you can be sure you aren’t buying a dodgy fake, as everything is vetted.

  1. M&S Satin Lace Insert Cami Top
  2. Missoma Hera Ridge Pendant Cord Necklace
  3. Arket Nylon Jacket
  4. COS Oval Silver Bangle
  5. Boden Valentina Taffeta Midi Skirt
  6. COS Merino Wool Polo Jumper
  7. Vestiaire Collective Nylon Prada Bag
  8. Grenson Phillipa Loafers

TRIPLE DENIM

Because why should we stop at double? My only ‘rule’ here would be to not wear the exact same shade of denim across all your pieces. Go for a more tonal effect instead and break it up with a contrasting belt and accessories.

  1. Mango Denim shirt
  2. Arket Corduroy-Collar Denim Overshirt
  3. La Redoute Braided Leather Belt
  4. Zara bangles 5 pack
  5. Tommy Hilfiger 70s High Rise Wide Leg Jeans
  6. Gucci Ophidia Medium GG tote bag
  7. Adidas Handball Spezial Trainers

THE DRESS I HAVEN’T WORN ENOUGH

I love this dress from Rixo, but (shock, horror) it’s been too warm for most of the summer to wear it. Thankfully, it’s perfect for the more temperate climes of September. To avoid it looking too girly, I’ve been wearing it with my old Gucci loafers – bought in 2014 and still worn a LOT to this day. They’re worth every penny, although the price has basically doubled since then, so maybe another one to check the resale sites for.

  1. Monica Vinader Capri Multi Pearl Drop Earrings
  2. Aligne Daphne Waisted Blazer
  3. Rixo Meg Leopard Polka Dot Dress
  4. Ganni Bou Black Knotted Handle Bag
  5. Gucci Horse-bit Loafers

I might do back-to-work outfits next week, or new shoes, or maybe both. We shall see.

Enjoy the first week of September – think of it as a beginning, not an end.
