If you’re already feeling a bit sick of glitter and sequins, this one is for you. Think of it as ideas for what to wear during those in-between days, when Christmas Day is done but you still don’t have to go back to work for a while. I refuse to call this Twixmas, and I cannot abide Crimbo-Limbo, so we’re sticking with In-Between Days as it works fine and it’s also one of my favourite songs by The Cure. 

At this point, a shout-out to anyone who does have to go back to work between Christmas and New Year. I salute all of you. My youngest son recently got a part-time job at TK Maxx on Oxford Street, so he feels your pain. Talk about a baptism of fire: working in retail isn’t for the faint-hearted, especially at this time of year, on the busiest shopping street in all the land, in a shop that’s treated like a massive jumble sale by bargain hunters.

Let’s take a calming look at some nice, sedate everyday outfits for you to try. 

WINTER WALK

Not a great big hike, just a nice, easy walk. Maybe you’ll wander about town or take in one of those art galleries or museums that you’ve been meaning to visit all year but never got round to. I joined the Design Museum over four months ago. Have I been to the two exhibitions I want to see? No, I have not, but I do intend to during this time. I just need to check it’s actually open.

PUB LUNCH

There’s nothing quite like a pub lunch that doesn’t have an official end. Especially if you can find a pub that does a cheeseboard for dessert, as that means it’s obligatory to order another bottle of Malbec to go with it.

SHOPPING THE SALES

I’d advise avoiding TK Maxx at the Marble Arch end of Oxford Street, unless you want a lanky teen glaring at you for not putting the shoes back where you found them. And for the love of God, don’t be one of those people outside the big Next in the retail park at 5a.m. on Boxing Day. Open another tin of Quality Street and put your feet up instead.
