The (Big) Small Brand Gift Guide

As promised, I bring you my small-brand gift guide. I wanted to publish this during the Black Friday whirlwind as a reminder that, as much as we all love a bargain from the big brands, it’s good to think about the little guys too. Many of them can’t afford to offer large discounts; they work on small margins with limited runs. So yes, you may pay a bit more, but you’re getting something original and unique — and genuinely making the brand you buy from happy.

This year, I’m giving you 51 small brands to choose from. I hope you find something you love — let’s be honest, probably for yourself rather than someone else — but you can always send this post to the person who might be buying your present this year.

KNITWEAR

I have a piece of knitwear from every one of these brands, and in the case of Hades Wool and Suermondt I have quite a few, because they are just so good. You won’t find any acrylic, polyester or mass-produced jumpers here — just quality knits that you’ll be wearing for years.

  1. Porridge Knitwear Cashmere Lucy Cardigan
  2. Hades Wool Opposites Patchwork Cardigan
  3. Slow Love Cherub Wool Jumper
  4. Charl Knits Harrison Wool Jumper
  5. Genevieve Sweeney Lea Wool Cardigan
  6. Orwell & Austen Rainbow Smile Cashmere Jumper
  7. Suermondt Cashmere Sticker Jumper

ACCESSORIES

Basically, bags, gloves and socks — because in my opinion you can never have too many of them for yourself, and they also make excellent gifts. Especially the gloves I designed with Black and Beech… though of course, I’m biased.

  1. M.Hulot Alex Cross Body Bag
  2. Scott Samuel Leather Woven Handbag
  3. Black & Beech x Me Cashmere Mittens
  4. Honey & Toast Silver Libby Hobo Bag
  5. Mabel Sheppard Navy Leather Eyes Gloves
  6. Mina & The Moon Velvet Pouch
  7. SWYC Blue Denim Shopper Bag
  8. Ruby + Ruby Cotton Check Socks
  9. Ivy Ellis Slub 1/4 Length Socks

CLOTHES

I’m a fan of all these brands, but I do need to give special mention to Sian Esther who makes my absolute favourite pyjamas. So soft and cosy.

  1. If Only If Tartan Nightie
  2. Edit Brand Collection Plaid Blouse
  3. 46 Stitch Bow Tie Neck Jumper
  4. Tabitha Webb Tiger Silk Pussy Bow Blouse
  5. The Well Worn Felicity Cord Dress
  6. Rock On Ruby Coffee Gin Sweatshirt
  7. Sian Esther X Gail Jones Green Bow Velvet Pyjamas
  8. FWP by Rae Margarita T Shirt

FOR THE HOME

Food and drink gifts are some of my absolute favourites, but I’ve also included a few things to brighten up the home. And honestly, don’t we all need a “Can’t Be Arsed” tea towel in our lives?

  1. Lady Bakewell ‑Park Homemade Jammie Dodgers
  2. Lucky Number 5 Design — CBA Tea Towel
  3. SpitalFields Candle Company Scented Candle
  4. Dan Jamieson Ceramic Hate Plate
  5. Soto Garden — Heather Pot Plant Kit
  6. Crack Pottery Shop Apothecary Jar
  7. Iain Stevenson — Mickey Print
  8. Babak Ganji Louvre Painting
  9. Shrine To The Vine — Wine Subscription

VINTAGE JEWELLERY

You probably know by now that I’m a big fan of vintage jewellery. I love the idea that each piece has had a life — and a history — before it comes into your possession.

  1. Verno Jewelery Pearl Horseshoe Charm
  2. Jewels Antiqua Victorian M Pin Brooch
  3. The Hidden Jewel Emporium Twist Hoop Earrings
  4. Golddigger MCR vintage ships wheel charm
  5. Sobelle Jewellery Postbox Charm
  6. Forage & Find Sappohire and Diamond Ring
  7. Dangle The Carat infinity link bracelet
  8. Martinez-Negrillo Antiques Dachsund Charm
  9. Horners Jewellery Silver Castle Hill Pendant

CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY

All of these brands are owned, designed and run by women. In fact Zara Tahir and  Elyssia Ward from Expressive Forest even hand make every item they sell.

  1. Zara Tahir Jewellery Amphora Pendant Necklace
  2. Louise Sinclair Gold Gem Snake Ring
  3. Regilt Love Letters Charm Bracelet
  4. Decadorn Triple Pendant Necklace
  5. Katie Mullally Irish Double Coin Necklace
  6. Expressive Forest Delft Cat Charm
  7. Louise Wade Horseshoe Signet Ring
  8. Wolf & Moon Pastry Charm Earrings
  9. Loel Woven Thread Knot Earrings

I’m sure I’ve forgotten plenty of other independent brands, so apologies to them — but do seek them out yourself. Visit your local Christmas markets and spread a little love to the small entrepreneurs this season.
