Wardrobe Staples — The Trench Coat

The classic Trench Coat, I can’t believe I’ve not done a post about this before, so now is the time. to rectify that. I have to say, I had always read about how trench coats were a wardrobe ‘must have’ for years and years but never really ‘got’ them until I found my own perfect one. Now, I’m a massive convert. They really are the perfect spring coat. Warm, but not too warm, for when the weather finally turns out for us, smart, but not too smart, and shower proof! what’s not to like? Plus if you buy a the traditional classic style, it should last you for years and never go out of fashion.

I got my Trench from the Alexa Chung range at M&S acouple of years ago. Unfortunately no longer sold, but they tend to do a similar one every season. My one is green, so I’m tempted to also go for a classic beige one a‑la Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffanys, or Columbo… I’d probably feel like Audrey Hepburn in my head, but in real life, I’m sure I’d look more like a crumpled Peter Faulk…

CLASSIC TRENCH

This is your ultimate trench. Will never date, so worth spending a little bit more on to get the best quality. Pretty much every thing A.P.C make is classic, they don’t go in much for trends. I have a bomber jacket I got in the sale from there 6 years ago, still wear it, still looks new. Pairing this one with earthy colours and wide leg trousers.

1. A.P.C. Greta cotton-twill Trenchcoat
2. Top Shop check Asymmetric Shirt
3. & Other Stories Woven Leather Bag
4. Toast Cotton Line Pleat Culottes

NAVY TRENCH

If, like me you worry about getting a load of muck on your light coloured trench then maybe go for a darker one. Check out this one from M&S. I would advise sizing down, M&S coats tend to come up big. Keeping it casual with a great jumper from Weekday and star jeans from Hush. throwing in some Stellas even though I know most people think they are ridiculous, but this is my blog and I love them! More sensible brogues and flatforms are available below…

1. M&S Navy Trench Coat
2. Weekday Riley Sweater
3. Hush Frayed Star Jeans
4. Stella McCartney Elyse Flatforms

RED TRENCH

If you want to stand out from the crowd, why not try your luck with a red version? River Island is a bit of a revelation to me of late, to be honest I don’t usually shop there much, but they’ve come up trumps recently. This red number also comes in beige for the slightly less daring. It’s almost jumpsuit season too! Spring is the best time for them, not too cold, but not too hot, as you can’t really shed any layers in an all-in-one. That would not be appropriate…

1. River Island Red Double Collar Trench Coat
2. Marc Jacobs Snapshot Leather Bag
3. Weekday Jimi Short Sleeve Jumpsuit
4. Top Shop Betty Ankle Boots

EMBROIDERED TRENCH

Let your trench do the talking. How cute is this one from Olivia Rubin? I can’t get enough of her stuff, everything is so cute. She does amazing dresses and skirts, definitley worth checking her site out if you have an event coming up. I wore her ‘Ines’ dress to The Brit Awards last month, it was gorgeous. I digress, back to the coats, I’d keep it simple with this one, a chambray shirt, cropped trousers and trainers would be perfect.

1. Olivia Rubin Floral Embroidered Trench
2. Top Shop Star Print Chambray Shirt
3. Nike Pink Internationalist Trainers
4. Selected Femme Cropped Trousers

How do you feel about Trench Coats? do you have one? Are they a staple item for you in the Spring?
