Ready to join the Blazer Squad? I thought we should do a smarter option to last weeks more casual spring jackets post. A blazer is my ultimate go-to item to instantly smarten up any look. When I wear one I feel like a grown-up. Or at least I feel like it gives people the illusion that I actually know what I’m doing. It’s all a lie, of course, as we should be aware that no one REALLY knows what they are doing. I’m pretty sure that 97% of the population are just winging it. Apart from maybe the Queen, heart surgeons and some of those experts on the Antiques Roadshow. The rest of us, not a clue.
But if you want to give off that aura of authority, get yourself a blazer. Let’s have a look at some of my favourite blazer combos…
BOLD & BRIGHT
Let’s start off with a bang and go headfirst into a full-on orange suit. I LOVE this outfit. I’d really feel like I meant bizness in this get-up. If you’re going for a blazer as striking as this, I would advise keeping the rest of the outfit simple. A plain white T‑shirt or a simple graphic one will suffice. I still love wearing trainers with a suit, it’s the 90s trend I’ve never got over. Unlike ultra low-rise jeans, massive belts and handkerchief tops which should all be confined to the annals of history.
MODERN FRENCH CHIC
I think I only say this is French chic due to the Isabel Marant blazer. But I do love the Isabel style, it feels so cool-girl. She does a lot of ruffles and frills that can be tricky, but her classic oversized blazers are something that will never go out of style. I would advise sizing down unless you want it really big. Pair with pretty much anything – I mean, if you’ve spent that much cash money on a jacket, you need to wear it A LOT. But, for today, let’s add a pair of wide-leg jeans, a lace-detail blouse, tan handbag and, to update it for 2022, a pair of ‘fisherman’s sandals’.
LOVING THE LEOPARD
This outfit is basically my go-to for any fancy-ish event. I have this Ganni dress in red and it’s been worn with my Anine Bing blazer to two weddings, three parties and one awards show. I have no shame in repeat wearing. If you know you love an outfit and you feel comfortable in it, who cares if people have seen you in it before. This blazer is slightly oversized, but only slightly. I have it in medium, so go for your regular size. It’s really versatile; I’d say it’s my MOST useful blazer.
MODERN DAY MIAMI VICE
I’m not advocating going the full Don Johnson. Actually, looking at this photo, I think I might be…there’s nothing wrong with a pale blazer teamed with a pair of white jeans. You can even push up the sleeves, but please don’t buy a blazer that already has ruched sleeves. They are a personal pet hate of mine. I can’t even put my finger on why, I just don’t like them.
ADD A BIT OF DENIM
Denim jumpsuits and a blazer? Yes! Look how cool Katie Holmes is in this get-up. You don’t want anything too fitted over your boilersuit, so look for slightly oversized blazers. Obviously the Issy M ones are the ultimate but there are other options, like this cream cotton one from Gap. It also comes in a khaki green – you know how I feel about green.
SIMPLE & CLASSIC
Just adding a basic black blazer to this look immediately makes it smarter and more put together. That right there is why I love them. Any one item that can completely change the feel of an outfit is totally worth having in your wardrobe. P.S. These Hush Agnes jeans are excellent. They have the perfect amount of stretch and shape. Take your regular size.
Thanks for reading as ever. Next week I might attempt the 15 piece spring capsule wardrobe again as I’ve had a few requests to do an updated one.
