Wardrobe Staples: The Navy Trousers

Welcome to another in the, somewhat sporadic, series of Wardrobe Staples. This week I’m adding the classic Navy Trousers to my list. They are an item of clothign that you can’t really have enough of, when I say you, I obviously mean me, again, as I have about 5 pairs. All slightly different you understand, and therefore completely justified. I do prefer navy to black quite a lot these days, just slightly less harsh and slightly less like wearing a uniform. I can’t wear a white shirt and black trousers still to this day as it reminds me too much of my time as a part-time waitress and being an usher at the Hammersmith Apollo. Although those were fun-times, Oh, the stories I could tell…

Anyway, Navy trousers, I love them and I’m adding them to the list. This series could go on forever, I’ve not even covered, coats, shoes or dresses yet. In case you have forgotten, the ‘Staples’ featured before are, White trainers, Black Leather Biker Jacket, Breton Stripe Top, Denim Jacket, Smart Blazer, Wide Leg Cropped Trousers and a Pleated Skirt. As luck would have it, almost all of these go perfectly well with navy trousers, so here you go…

NAVY TROUSERS AND WHITE TRAINERS

Starting off with my go-to footwear to pair with navy trousers. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you should now all have a pair of classic white trainers in your wardrobe. The most iconic ones are always going to be the original Stan Smiths. I’ve added MY Whistles coat, but I think it’s selling out quick, if it has by the time this is published then try John Lewis or Selfridges, they also stock Whistles and they honour the current 20% discount until Monday too. This is the Phoebe Philo look that I love, slouchy polo neck with a beautiful pair of tailored trousers and box fresh Stans.

NAVY TROUSERS AND A DENIM JACKET

Don’t pack away your summer denim jacket just yet, those of us in the South are enjoying a brief respite from Autumn this weekend, but even when the chills return a denim jacket is your perfect layering piece. I always buy my winter coats a little on the large side so there’s an option to double-up with denim. I am massively craving these navy cord trousers from & Other Stories. By the time you’ve read this, I may well have slipped up to Regent Street for a swift purchase. I’ve also added the breton and the white trainers so we are covering 4 wardrobe staples in one outfit here…

NAVY TROUSERS AND A DENIM SHIRT

Another classic combo. You should all have a denim shirt in your possession by now, this Monsoon one is a more girly-fied version which works perfectly with a smart pair of navy trousers. I loved the version of this pink coat that Top Shop did last year, I guess I wasn’t the only one, as they’ve re-issued it again for this season.

NAVY TROUSERS AND A BLAZER

The absolute easiest way to look smart without even trying is to throw on a blazer. You don’t need to buy a suit, just wear the same colour on the bottom and it looks even more like you’ve made a massive effort. If you really want to up your game even further add a classic white shirt. As a side note, I bought a steamer from Ebay a few weeks ago. Best purchase ever! My wardrobe is so crowded sometimes things come out of it not looking their best. With the steamer I can sort them out in double quick time it’s a revelation for a lazy-arse like me, anything that saves time and ironing is just brilliant.
