Midweek Mens Special

I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time, but never got around to it. I always get annoyed when my chosen Sunday Supplement magazine does a mens fashion special as it means there is NOTHING FOR ME TO BUY. But, as it’s getting close to present buying season, maybe you could use this as a bit of present inspiration or show it to the man in your life and see what he thinks?

I’ve done a little bit of research about what men think about shopping for themselves, and fashion in general, and I’ve come to the conclusion they don’t do it or think about it very often. They also have very specific tastes. My friend Dave at work will only wear one brand of jeans and always has to have a patch pocket on his T-Shirts. Morad, also at work, will only buy a certain thickness and quality of denim, and will think nothing of spending upwards of £200 on jeans because he knows he will only buy one pair every 18 months or so.

I buy 90% of my husbands clothes (Crocs notwithstanding), He gets them for Christmas and Birthday and barely buys anything himself in between those times. He will also literally wear something until it falls apart. Men, they are very strange creatures. I’ve put together a few things that I like, that I would buy for my husband and that I hope would be fairly timeless and last until they wear out!

BOOTS

The brands that kept coming up here as being the most popular amongst the men I know are, Grenson, Red Wing, Clarks Originals and Dr Martens. So I’ve stuck to these four for now. They are all tough, hard wearing and classic.

KNITWEAR

I’ve come to realise most men don’t want too much of a pattern, a logo is fine, so long as it’s the ‘right’ logo, but mainly the plainer the better. Although this is my post, so I have thrown in a fox and a landscape scene just because I can.

OUTERWEAR

Personally I like a classic overcoat for a men in the winter, but I’m also a fan of a classic parka or a bomber, so I’ve picked out a few variations for outwear.

TROUSERS & JEANS

These are the trickiest of all I think, these are the things men seem to be pickiest about. We all have our favoured brands, but I think the rule for men is nothing too tight, the Love Island brand of super skinny jeans doesn’t do anyone any favours. Dark Denim is a winner and classic chino style trousers.

I hope this hasn’t bored you too much. I’ll be doing Chunky Winter ankle boots on Sunday – for the ladies.

    1. Thanks Father! I assume that meant to say it didn’t bore you, or maybe it didn’t move you. Either way is good .

  1. Was hoping one of you fashion ladies I follow would do a men’s fashion post. I too have to buy my husband’s clothes. Great ideas. Thank you.

P.S. teenage boys would be another request from me. My 14 year old is just starting to get interested. Xxx

  2. You’ve nailed this, and described my husband to a tee (his beloved Redwings are 15 years old and still going strong, jeez)
