Best Dressed Wedding Guest

Wedding season is well and truly upon us again. When I say us, I mean you as I haven’t actually been invited to any this year, but that is unsurprising as I’m at an age where it’s 2nd marriages at best, so the invitations are drying up. But I have had quite a few requests from you lovely people who read this blog to do a feature on what to wear to a wedding, so I’m giving it a go.

I have to admit that I do have a problem with ‘event’ dressing. I find it so easy to buy things to wear on a daily basis, but when it comes to dressing up fancy I get into a bit of a sweaty panic, but I’ve had a look around the shops and there are actually some lovely things out there that could work very well for summer wedding. I’ve broken it down into sections for you , so I hope there is something here for everyone.

THE LACE DRESS

This seems to be a big trend this summer. I do love a bit of lace but the main thing to remember here is not to buy white lace, not unless you seriously want to fall out with the bride! I’m guessing it’s still frowned upon to wear white at a wedding, or am I totally outdated? There are some gorgeous pastel coloured lace dresses around right now, these two below have a nice high waist, perfect for hiding any lumps and bumps in the tummy department. I’d always favour a more comfortable shoe as you have to wear them all day, but I know there are some brave people out there who can rock a stiletto all day…

THE MAXI DRESS

This is an ideal one for a summer shindig for those who are not keen on showing too much leg — saves on the waxing bills too! There is also the added bonus of being able to get away with wearing total flats, ideally a nice pair of sandals for wafting around in. How amazing is this embellished number from Mango? You may well actually upstage the bride in this one!

THE MIDI DRESS

This is one I would favour. A midi dress WITH sleeves, covering all the bits I don’t like, but still looking elegant. I know the M&S dress doesn’t look like much in this picture, but when it’s on it drapes really nicely, has a nice tie back feature and looks way more expensive than it is. It’s simple, but I would wear with my gold Gucci’s to jazz it up a bit. I plan to wear this to a party in a few weeks. I think it’s a bit Victoria Beckham…

THE TROUSER SUIT

Another look for me, I really like wearing a smart jacket and trouser combo. I guess if you have a ‘proper’ job and have to wear a suit often then it might not hold the same appeal, but I love to wear a smart suit to events. It feels different to obvious dress option. This look would work well for a more low-key city wedding…

THE SKIRT AND SEPARATES

If you don’t want to splash out on a dress and would rather spend your cash on things you can get more wear out of (I’m putting my hand up for this), then separates are the ones for you. Subtle tones of pink here for a really girly look, but you could easily wear that skirt with a T‑shirt and trainers, and that jacket would be perfect with jeans…

THE LBD

Finally the easy option. If all else fails you can’t go wrong with a little black dress. It will always look chic. Is it OK to wear all black to a wedding? I think it is. Fancy it up a bit with some embellished sandals. This would be a great look for an evening wedding, or god ‑forbid, for those two-tier weddings when you are only invited to the second half party. Hello B Lister. We’ve all been there!

The best wedding I ever went to was obviously my own. It was 14 years ago now. We had it in my parents back garden. Didn’t have a B list, had BBQ dinner and ice creams for dessert. My husband cried all the way through it (with overwhelming joy I can only assume…) We danced to soft rock and were still drinking the French booze-cruise champagne a year later. Happy Days.
